BRICS bridge- On the morning of April 29th, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) in Shanghai and met with its President, Dilma Rousseff. Rousseff, along with four Vice Presidents and staff, warmly welcomed Xi upon his arrival. During the meeting, Xi congratulated Rousseff on her re-election as the President of the NDB. He highlighted that the NDB, as the first multilateral development institution established and led by emerging market and developing countries, represents a pioneering effort for global South cooperation and aligns with the historical trend of reforming and improving global governance. Xi stressed that “BRICS cooperation” has entered a stage of high-quality development, and the NDB should embark on a second “golden decade” of high-quality development.

President Xi emphasized that the NDB should stay true to its original mission, closely align with the development needs of the global South, and provide more high-quality, low-cost, and sustainable infrastructure financing. He also urged the bank to strengthen its internal management and operations, implement more technology and green finance projects, help developing countries bridge the digital divide, and accelerate green and low-carbon transformations. Xi noted that China, as the host country, will continue to support the NDB’s operational development and strengthen project cooperation with a focus on green, innovative, and sustainable development. He expressed China’s willingness to share development experiences with other member countries through the NDB and provide more international public goods.

Rousseff thanked China for its strong support in the growth and development of the NDB. She commended China’s remarkable development achievements under Xi’s leadership and its significant role in advancing global governance. Rousseff stated that in the current turbulent global situation, the Chinese government firmly defends the interests of the global South, supports multilateralism, safeguards international fairness and justice, and promotes the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind, setting an example for the international community. She added that the NDB will remain true to its original aspirations, actively contribute to the development of developing countries and emerging market countries, despite the erosion of international law authority and damage to the stability of industrial and supply chains caused by unilateralism and protectionism.
