Thailand has formally appealed to India for support in securing full BRICS membership, emphasizing that such an upgrade would significantly strengthen its role in regional economic integration. Thai officials highlighted that joining BRICS as a full member would open wider channels for trade, investment, technology cooperation, and strategic development partnerships. The request was delivered during high-level talks between the foreign ministers of both countries, underscoring Bangkok’s intent to elevate its geopolitical position within Asia.
India, which will assume the BRICS chairmanship in 2026, plays a decisive role in future admission processes. Thailand stressed that India’s endorsement would substantially accelerate its pathway from BRICS partner status to full membership. Discussions also touched on aligning Thailand’s development priorities with BRICS economic frameworks, particularly in supply chain resilience, digital innovation, agriculture, energy security, and financial connectivity across the Global South.
Thailand officially joined the BRICS partnership format on 1 January 2025, marking an initial step toward deeper involvement. The country now aims to transition from observer-partner engagement to full participation in BRICS decision-making structures. Bangkok views this upgrade as essential for expanding bilateral cooperation with member states, strengthening multilateral diplomacy, and securing a voice in shaping future BRICS+ initiatives and global governance reforms.
