African and Gulf leaders meeting to discuss investment and development cooperation under the BRICS+ framework

Africa’s growing engagement with Gulf partners and the BRICS+ platform signals a strategic shift toward multipolar cooperation, reducing reliance on traditional powers and positioning the continent as an active player in the emerging global order.

As global power structures evolve and traditional alliances shift, Africa is strengthening its strategic ties with the Gulf region — a development that marks a new era of “South–South” cooperation, diversified partnerships, and multipolar diplomacy. This transformation reflects Africa’s growing agency in shaping its own development path and engaging with partners beyond its traditional relationships with the West and China.

A range of African governments and financial institutions are now engaging with Gulf states not merely as recipients of investment but as long-term strategic partners. The United Arab Emirates, in particular, is emerging as a vital gateway for capital, trade, and technological collaboration, while new bilateral and multilateral initiatives are creating deeper economic and political linkages.

Within this context, the BRICS+ framework has become a key platform for institutionalizing and deepening these partnerships. New members such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE are working closely with African nations like South Africa and Egypt on projects in infrastructure, finance, and industrial development — signaling a significant realignment in the global economic order.
