South Africa has commissioned its highest altitude automatic weather station at 3,100 meters in the Mont aux Sources area of the Maloti Drakensberg Mountains. Operated by SAEON in partnership with the Afromontane Research Unit at the University of the Free State, the station continuously records temperature, humidity, wind, solar radiation, rainfall and air pressure in real time. The high resolution data will deepen understanding of mountain climate dynamics, help track long term environmental change and support more informed management of regional water catchments and fragile high altitude ecosystems.
South Africa has activated its highest-altitude weather station, located at 3,100 metres above sea level in the Mont-aux-Sources area of the Maloti‑Drakensberg Mountains.
The station, operated by SAEON in cooperation with Afromontane Research Unit at the University of the Free State, will continuously record temperature, humidity, wind, solar radiation, rainfall and air pressure — providing real-time climate data.
The collected data aims to improve understanding of high-altitude climate dynamics, monitor environmental change and support water-resource and ecosystem management across the region.
