The Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit is bringing together leaders of major Eurasian powers in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The gathering marks the 25th anniversary of the SCO, with discussions covering regional security, counter-terrorism, trade, energy, transport connectivity, financial cooperation and digital development.
Economic and regional connectivity are expected to form an important part of the agenda, including efforts to expand intra-SCO trade, strengthen cross-border payment mechanisms and develop transport and supply-chain routes across Eurasia. The summit is also expected to produce the Bishkek Declaration and a package of documents covering areas including security, economy, transport, environmental cooperation and artificial intelligence.
On the sidelines of the summit, Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin are scheduled to hold bilateral talks, with energy cooperation among the key issues. The Kremlin has confirmed that the proposed Power of Siberia 2 pipeline will be discussed. The planned 2,600-kilometre system is designed to transport up to 50 billion cubic metres of Russian gas annually to China through Mongolia, potentially further strengthening the long-term energy relationship between Moscow and Beijing.
