Myanmar and BRICS flags symbolizing new membership and expanding global influence

The membership bids from Myanmar and Laos underscore BRICS’ growing influence in the developing world and its emergence as a strategic alternative to the traditional global order.

Myanmar has officially declared its intention to join the BRICS bloc, with the country’s Minister of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations stating that the government seeks to leverage the organization’s potential for economic development and enhanced multilateral cooperation. The decision comes amid shifting geopolitical dynamics and BRICS’ rising influence in the global order.

Alongside Myanmar, Laos has also joined the list of interested nations by submitting a formal membership application. This growing interest highlights BRICS’ appeal as an economic and political platform for developing countries seeking greater access to markets, investment opportunities, and global influence.

Currently, more than 46 countries have expressed interest in joining BRICS, with 23 of them having submitted official applications. This new wave of membership bids reflects the bloc’s expanding role in shaping a multipolar world order and reducing dependence on Western-centric financial and political structures.
