Britain has escalated pressure on the Israeli government by declaring the continued occupation of Palestinian territories unlawful and moving against trade linked to Israeli settlements. Israel has retaliated with diplomatic restrictions against Britain. The dispute represents another sign of widening tensions between the Israeli government and some of its traditional Western partners.
The United Kingdom has sharply intensified its criticism of the Israeli government’s policies in the Palestinian territories, declaring that the continued occupation is unlawful. London also announced measures to prohibit imports from Israeli settlements and impose sanctions on individuals and companies involved in facilitating settlement expansion. The British government has accused extremist settlers of forcibly displacing Palestinian communities and criticized Israeli authorities for failing to prevent such actions.
Israel responded with a series of retaliatory diplomatic measures. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced the closure of the British Consulate in East Jerusalem and restrictions against certain British officials and nationals. Israel also moved to end British participation in a U.S.-led coordination mission concerning Gaza. The response marks a further deterioration in relations between Israel and one of its longstanding Western partners.
Pressure on the Israeli government is increasingly extending beyond the United Kingdom. France and Canada have also joined efforts targeting trade involving Israeli settlements, while other governments are considering similar measures. The growing international response could deepen Israel’s diplomatic isolation over settlement expansion, the occupation of Palestinian territories and the treatment of Palestinian communities.
