Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi speaking at BRICS meeting in New Delhi about Strait of Hormuz security

Iran says the Strait of Hormuz remains open for commercial shipping, but vessels must coordinate with Iranian naval forces while crossing the Persian Gulf. Abbas Araghchi stressed that Iran has created no obstacle in the waterway and accused the Americans of imposing a blockade and fueling insecurity through their military presence in the region.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated during the BRICS foreign ministers meeting in New Delhi that the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz remain open to all commercial shipping, but vessels crossing the strategic waterway must coordinate with Iranian naval forces. He stressed that Iran continues to support secure commercial navigation and maritime stability in the Persian Gulf.

According to international media reports, Araghchi rejected accusations that Tehran has disrupted maritime routes and insisted that Iran has created no obstacle in the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian foreign minister stated that it is the Americans who have imposed a blockade on the region and that US military presence and operations are responsible for rising tension and insecurity in the maritime routes of the Persian Gulf, not Iran.

The remarks drew widespread international attention because nearly one fifth of global oil shipments pass through the Strait of Hormuz, making any development around the corridor highly sensitive for global trade and energy markets. The statements also reflected growing diplomatic coordination between Iran and BRICS members on regional and security-related issues.
