University of Indonesia students have created RunSight, AI-enabled smart glasses to help visually impaired runners safely navigate tracks by real-time obstacle detection and guidance. The device’s lightweight design and focus on independence in athletic contexts reflect inclusive tech innovation. International recognition through the Samsung Solve For Tomorrow program highlights both the technological promise and social impact of this wearable solution.

Students from the University of Indonesia have unveiled RunSight, an AI-powered pair of smart glasses designed to help visually impaired runners navigate tracks safely and independently by analyzing surroundings in real time and providing guidance. The team—computer science students behind the project—emphasised the device’s lightweight, low-energy design and real-world usability, with the device combining sensors and AI to identify paths and obstacles during running sessions. This innovation emerged from direct user challenge insights and reflects a growing focus on tech solutions for inclusive physical activity. 

RunSight is specifically tailored to empower visually impaired athletes by offering real-time navigation assistance, addressing a gap in adaptive sports technology where conventional aids typically focus on daily mobility rather than athletic contexts. The glasses’ development prioritises comfort and affordability alongside technical performance, seeking to make competitive and recreational running more accessible. Selection as a Global Ambassador in the Samsung Solve For Tomorrow competition highlights international recognition for the project and underscores Indonesia’s growing role in youth-driven AI innovation. 

This initiative underlines how AI and wearable tech can expand inclusive opportunities in both sports and mobility for people with visual impairments, potentially paving the way for broader applications such as fitness-focused wearables and adaptive navigation systems in daily life. Widespread deployment would depend on further testing, user feedback, and scaling of production.
