Indonesia joined BRICS in January 2025 as its 10th member, expanding its global influence. The move opens aviation opportunities via financing, technology, and cooperation. Indonesia seeks stronger airspace sovereignty while balancing Western ties.

Indonesia’s entry into BRICS in January 2025 marks a major diplomatic and economic milestone, making it the 10th member of a bloc that now represents 45% of the world’s population and a rising share of global GDP.

For Indonesia, aviation is central to connecting its 17K islands, yet the sector suffers from infrastructure gaps and reliance on Western technology. BRICS membership offers access to alternative financing, technology transfer, and aerospace cooperation with China, India, and Russia.

While challenges remain in aligning global standards and balancing ties with the West, Indonesia views BRICS as a platform to strengthen airspace sovereignty, diversify supply chains, and promote more inclusive aviation governance.
