Ethiopia and India have elevated their long-standing relations to a strategic partnership, marking a new phase in bilateral cooperation that builds on ancient civilisational ties and modern diplomatic engagement. The announcement coincides with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first official visit to Ethiopia, highlighting growing political alignment between Africa and Asia.

Historically, ties between the two countries date back over 2,000 years, rooted in Indian Ocean trade during the Axumite Empire and sustained through maritime exchange, migration, and people-to-people links. In the modern era, diplomatic relations were formalised in 1948 and upgraded in 1950, with Ethiopia among the first African states to open an embassy in New Delhi. Economic cooperation has since expanded steadily, with India emerging as one of Ethiopia’s leading trade partners and investors.

The partnership now spans trade, investment, education, defence, and multilateral cooperation, including within BRICS, which Ethiopia joined in 2024. India has supported Ethiopia through capacity-building programmes, scholarships, and development cooperation, while recent steps such as a 2025 Joint Defence Cooperation meeting signal deeper strategic engagement. The upgraded relationship reflects shared priorities around South–South cooperation, global governance reform, and long-term development.
