Egypt launches a green label for plastic products. Criteria include recycled content, design, or biodegradability. Phased rollout aims to cut waste and boost export competitiveness.

Egypt has begun implementing a national green label certification for plastic products and packaging to promote recycling and reduce waste, according to the Ministry of Environment. The label will be granted to products that meet at least one of three criteria: use of recycled materials, disposal-friendly design, or full biodegradability, encouraging manufacturers to shift toward sustainable production models.

The initiative is led by the Waste Management Regulatory Authority, in coordination with the Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Environment, and bodies responsible for standardisation and export–import control. Beyond waste reduction, the system targets lower carbon emissions, higher compliance with environmental standards, and improved competitiveness of Egyptian exports.

Technical guidelines for green labelling were issued in Nov 2024, with packaging guidelines finalised in Nov 2025. Implementation will be phased to ease compliance for manufacturers, aligning industrial transition with environmental goals.
