The Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Opportunities of Joining BRICS+

Pathways to Stability, Development, and Partnership in the Emerging Global South Economy

In recent decades, the global economic structure has undergone deep transformations. The Global South comprising nations with vast populations, natural resources, and aspirations for progress seeks a more equitable order. The BRICS+ framework represents a coalition of such countries, aiming to rebalance global power and ensure inclusive growth.

Among them, the *Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)* stands out as a pivotal state in Africa, endowed with immense natural wealth, cultural diversity, and a central geographic position. Understanding Congo’s governance, stability, and economic trajectory offers insight into Africa’s integration with the evolving BRICS+ architecture.

  • Governance and Institutional Reform

Over the past decade, the Congolese government has launched significant reforms to rebuild state institutions and strengthen fiscal transparency.

The World Bank and IMF have supported these efforts through multi-billion-dollar development programs focused on transport, digital connectivity, and governance. The objective has been to enhance accountability, transparency, and connectivity between internal regions and global markets.

However, persistent challenges remain—corruption, uneven wealth distribution, and dependency on raw mineral exports. In response, the government initiated the **Strategic Resources Transparency Program (2025)** to ensure that revenues from cobalt, copper, and other minerals directly benefit local communities.

  • Security and Stability

The eastern provinces have long faced insecurity due to armed groups, but the **2025 Congo–Rwanda Peace Agreement** has opened the door to gradual stabilization.

This peace process, supported by the African Union and regional partners, focuses on demobilization, reintegration, and reconstruction. Sustainable peace requires not only military control but also restoration of trust, education, health, and local economic development the foundation for long-term stability and investment.

  • Economic and Geostrategic Capacities

The DRC, with over 112 million inhabitants and an area exceeding 2.3 million km², is the heart of Africa.

It holds some of the world’s largest reserves of cobalt, copper, diamonds, and coltan—critical for green technologies. Its tropical forests and hydropower potential make it central to global climate and energy transitions.

Its geography, bordering nine countries, positions it as a natural hub for trans-African trade and logistics.

  • Opportunities of Joining BRICS+

1. South–South Investment and Technology Transfer: Access to the New Development Bank (NDB) can fund strategic infrastructure and industrialization.

2. Economic Diversification: Partnerships with China, India, and Brazil can help move from raw extraction to local value addition.

3. Enhanced Political Standing: Membership in BRICS+ would amplify Congo’s role as a moderate and unifying African voice.

4. Cultural Bridge between Africa and Asia: Congo could promote people-to-people cooperation and cultural diplomacy within BRICS+.

5. Continental Connectivity: BRICS-backed projects linking Congo with Angola and Tanzania could create a continental corridor for energy and trade.

Conclusion

If the DRC consolidates governance, security, and transparency, it can emerge as a core pillar of the Global South’s responsible economic order.

Joining BRICS+ would not only accelerate national development but also empower Africa to redefine its relationship with the world on the principles of fairness, inclusivity, and mutual respect.

Congo’s journey embodies the essence of a rising South—turning natural wealth into shared prosperity and balanced global growth.
