China's economic talks with the U.S. on terms of mutual respect and fairness.

China has agreed to hold economic talks with the U.S. after assessing signals of tariff adjustment from Washington. Beijing emphasized that any negotiation must be based on mutual respect and warned it won’t tolerate pressure or unfair terms. China reaffirmed its commitment to global trade justice and multilateralism.

China has agreed to enter economic talks with the United States, but on its own terms. Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng will meet U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in Switzerland from May 9 to 12. This meeting follows a period of tension, during which the U.S. imposed unilateral tariff measures that, according to China, disrupted bilateral relations and the global economy. In response, China took countermeasures to defend its interests. Now, as the U.S. signals willingness to ease some tariffs and re-engage in dialogue, China has conditionally agreed to talk.

China has made clear that it welcomes dialogue only under principles of mutual respect, equal consultation, and mutual benefit. Beijing insists that the U.S. acknowledge the damage its actions have caused and demonstrate genuine intent to resolve disputes fairly. China warns that it will not tolerate negotiations used as cover for pressure tactics or coercion. Any move to compromise its core principles or international justice will be firmly rejected.

While other economies may choose appeasement in negotiations with the U.S., China declares that only by upholding fairness, justice, and multilateral trade rules can national interests be safeguarded. Regardless of global shifts, China will continue to open up, defend free trade, and resist hegemonic bullying through cooperation and solidarity with global partners.
