During Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s visit to China, the two nations signed a cooperation agreement under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), witnessed by President Xi Jinping. The deal, concluded on the sidelines of the 4th Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum in Beijing, reflects the deepening strategic partnership between Beijing and Bogotá amid global uncertainty.
President Xi emphasized Colombia’s formal accession to BRI as a new opportunity to elevate bilateral cooperation in areas such as high-quality exports, Chinese investment in Colombian infrastructure, and joint development in green energy, new-energy vehicles, the digital economy, and AI. Both sides also agreed to strengthen educational, cultural, and tourism exchanges to solidify people-to-people ties.
In a separate meeting with Chilean President Gabriel Boric, Xi called for broader collaboration under the BRI framework, focusing on green minerals, agriculture, AI, and scientific cooperation. Boric reaffirmed Chile’s commitment to the one-China principle and expressed interest in expanding trade and investment with China while defending multilateralism and free trade.
