China introduces instant tax refund service for foreign tourists, aiming to boost tourism and consumption.

China has expanded its instant tax refund service nationwide, allowing foreign tourists to receive refunds immediately after purchases. The new policy streamlines the refund process, aiming to boost inbound tourism and consumption. Experts say it will enhance China’s tourism appeal and support economic growth.

BRICS bridge- China has expanded its instant tax refund service for overseas tourists nationwide, aiming to boost inbound tourism and consumption, according to the State Taxation Administration. Previously, the service was piloted in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen. Under the new policy, foreign visitors can now receive tax refunds immediately after making purchases at designated stores, rather than waiting until departure.

To avail of the refund, tourists must complete a credit card pre-authorization at the time of purchase. Upon departure, customs will verify the traveler’s identity and the purchased goods. Once all information is confirmed, the refund agency will release the pre-authorization, completing the refund process. This streamlined approach is expected to simplify the refund procedure and enhance the shopping experience for international visitors.

Li Xuhong, deputy dean of the Beijing National Accounting Institute, noted that the policy would unlock the potential of inbound consumption, improve China’s tourism environment, and contribute to high-quality economic growth. The move reflects China’s ongoing efforts to attract more foreign tourists and stimulate domestic consumption amid a recovering global travel market.
