China staged its first World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing with varied robot sports. Robots impressed but often failed at basic physical tasks. The event underlines China’s AI ambitions backed by major investment.
Beijing hosted the inaugural World Humanoid Robot Games inside the National Speed Skating Oval (built for the 2022 Winter Olympics), gathering teams from leading Chinese tech universities and companies in competitions ranging from kickboxing and football to running and dancing.
The robots delivered entertaining performances, but flaws were visible—many struggled to keep balance, complete tasks, or maintain functionality throughout events, exposing the gap between ambition and practical robotics readiness.
Still, the event reflects China’s strategic push in embodied AI, backed by massive state funds and aimed at mastering sectors like elderly care and industrial automation amid tech competition with the U.S.
