China is pursuing parallel high-level diplomatic engagement with two strategically important partners: strengthening political and regional cooperation with Jordan while maintaining direct dialogue with India over one of the most sensitive issues in bilateral relations. The meetings underline Beijing’s active diplomatic engagement across both the Middle East and Asia.
China is intensifying its diplomatic engagement across the Middle East and South Asia. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi in Beijing on August 23, during King Abdullah II’s visit to China. The talks focused on strengthening strategic trust, expanding bilateral cooperation and advancing the China–Jordan strategic partnership.
The two foreign ministers also discussed developments in the Middle East. Wang emphasized the importance of the Palestinian issue, dialogue and efforts toward a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, while Safadi expressed Jordan’s interest in closer coordination with China on regional affairs and reaffirmed Jordan’s commitment to the One-China principle.
Meanwhile, Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is arriving in Beijing on August 24 ahead of the 25th round of China–India Special Representatives talks with Wang Yi on August 25. The discussions will focus on the longstanding boundary dispute, border management and stability along the Line of Actual Control. The timing is particularly significant ahead of the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi in September.
