Wind turbines and solar panels in Central Asia supported by Chinese energy cooperation

With China’s backing, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are fast-tracking major wind and solar projects that expand renewable capacity, reduce emissions, and enhance energy independence, while reinforcing long-term economic cooperation and positioning Central Asia as an emerging hub for green development.

Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are accelerating their green energy transition with China’s support, expanding cooperation on large-scale renewable energy projects aimed at strengthening energy security and reducing carbon emissions. The initiative reflects growing regional momentum toward sustainable development across Central Asia.

In Kazakhstan, agreements with Chinese partners include the construction of wind and solar projects with a combined capacity of 1.8 GW, representing investments of around 2.2 B USD and expected annual generation of more than 5.7 B kWh of clean electricity. These projects are designed to significantly cut emissions while supporting long-term economic growth.

Uzbekistan is also deepening collaboration with Chinese companies through wind energy projects and related industrial initiatives, alongside broader growth in bilateral trade and investment. Together, these efforts highlight China’s expanding role in supporting green infrastructure and energy transformation across the region.
