On April 28, 2025, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the first stage of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, chaired by Brazil’s FM Vieira. The meeting focused on BRICS’ role in promoting global peace and security. Marking the 80th anniversary of the UN, Wang urged BRICS nations to act as pillars of peace and development and emphasized the importance of wise decisions in shaping the future of humanity.

Wang Yi proposed several principles including support for President Xi’s Global Security Initiative, promoting dialogue-based security instead of confrontation, and encouraging peaceful solutions to crises such as Ukraine and Gaza. He advocated for a two-state solution in the Middle East and stronger cooperation in areas like poverty alleviation, agriculture, health, and education to empower the Global South.

The participants welcomed Indonesia’s official entry into BRICS and expressed unified support for China’s global initiatives. They rejected hegemonic politics and double standards, calling for diplomacy, multilateralism, and inclusive development. The joint goal remains to defend BRICS nations’ rights and build a fairer, more balanced international order.
