Moscow’s Oriental Art Museum opened “Journeys of Ancient Heroes,” a Balinese art exhibition. It features ~70 temple paintings and Wayang puppets — blending Balinese forms with epic-inspired storytelling. The show commemorates Indonesia’s 80th independence anniversary and 75 years of Russia-Indonesia diplomatic ties.
The State Museum of the Oriental Art in Moscow has opened a new exhibition titled Journeys of Ancient Heroes — focused on Balinese art from the island of Bali. The show features about 70 traditional Balinese temple paintings (some anonymous), mostly from 16th–20th centuries, many inspired by the ancient epics Mahabharata and Ramayana as adapted in Balinese culture.
The exhibition marks two milestones: the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, and the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Indonesia.
Alongside paintings, the exhibition includes traditional Wayang-style shadow puppets to show how different art forms on Bali interconnect — canvas and performance art. It runs until 8 February.
