Egypt has launched its 5G deployment with a $2.7B investment covering spectrum, licenses, and network upgrades. International partnerships and Open RAN adoption aim to lower costs and boost competitiveness. The phased rollout focuses on major cities, highways, and economic zones to drive growth.
Egypt has taken a significant step in its digital transformation journey by investing $2.7B in 5G infrastructure. This investment, initiated in 2019, covers spectrum acquisition, license approvals, and network upgrades. The country issued its first official 5G license in early 2024, with all major operators obtaining licenses by the end of the year. These developments reflect strong confidence from both domestic and international investors in Egypt’s digital vision.
At the 5G Egypt Forum held in Cairo, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Amr Talaat emphasized that 5G is not just about faster internet but also about enabling advanced applications across healthcare, agriculture, transportation, and industry. He also highlighted the importance of international partnerships and the adoption of Open RAN technology to reduce costs and enhance competitiveness in Egypt’s telecom sector.
The 5G rollout will follow a phased approach, initially focusing on major cities, key highways, and economic zones to maximize the technology’s economic impact. Egypt is also working closely with global partners to align its national spectrum strategy with international standards, ensuring sustainable growth and integration into the global digital economy.
